it figures that my parent's flight is delayed and benjamin's flight home got delayed in chicago. silly airplanes! Today we got a lot of stuff done at work. it was tedious and i think we did a lot of hand waving, but oh well. i will leave to go running soon then go see my parents. i dont think i will eat dinner at our hotel restaurant again... the food is just ok and i always get my food last!! grr.

today i met henry and his friend loona (a cute lil asain girl) for lunch since they were studying at cityU today. she was so cute, but only giggled and giggled and giggled. i think she thought i looked very funny. =/ or maybe it was because she was embarrissed of her english skills. i guess i would be shy too if i had to speak to some people in spanish. she spoke softly so it was hard to hear, but i thought she spoke very well. it was a nice break from work. her and henry were very cute and flirty. i hope his other girlfriends dont get too jealous =D

pics for henry!

Hong Kong Days 27-31

So Benjamin finally was able to come. I met him Saturday night. It took him 3 hrs to get to his hotel because his ride did not come and get him because he was a day late. After he got in I took him to mong kok to eat at the Singapore restaurant that some of the soccer guys had taken me. It was good. I tried some strange coconut drink with rice. I had some fish thing and it was delicious. Benjamin had perhaps one of the strangest things he ate here. It was a blueberry drink that was like jello. So it was drinking a jello thing. Afterwards we went back to my hotel so he could email his mom. It was so good to see him =) his hotel room was so small. It had a good view though.

The next day we went a little into sai kung (I think) to Clearwater beach. It was so pretty and I do not think it is the most beautiful of the sai kung beaches. We had to take a bus to get there. Pui was a big help in helping us find it (sean too a little). It was very cool –crowded because it was a Sunday I think and because it was not too far away from kowloon. The bus ride was like 45 mins. It was cool though, we did not want to travel too much because Benjamin was tired. There were other white people at the beach too so that was good and again the water was so warm. On our way back we ate at one of Chelsea and my favorite sandwich shops at kowloon tong. After we went back and cleaned up, we went to Victoria peak. It was so gorgeous and so much better than when I went before because it was a such a clear night. I really enjoyed walking around there with Benjamin. Although I think he was more excited about finding strange bugs and lizards then his “sexy” girl. Haha. Oh well. We also go delicious ice cream from hagan dozz (cant spell –don’t care) I got a green tea shake it was delicious =)

Monday I had to go to work –late too because we had to present =/ Benjamin was left to wander the city. And met us for some pizza at EXP at Festival walk. Then after work he met me at my hotel and we went and played soccer with some of my soccer friends. I played horrid and even henry told me that I played not so good and that he thought I was nervous because my boyfriend was there. We played again this little kid who was amazing. He could score at will. Benjamin scored one of our goals =) that was cool. There was an old white man who played with us –he was a pastor. He said I fouled him but I do not think I did, oh well I gave him the ball anyways. He talked a bit to us after and invited me to play with some other people on other days. I do not know if I could figure out where to find them. Besides I like the people I play with now anyways. Pui was very sweet and came and met us for dinner after soccer. We went to this place and I asked kinnex to order for us and get us something typical of HK. I got something that was decently good. It was a fried egg on top of some beef and rice. Benjamin’s dish ---which I think was kind of a joke—was some noodles with some shrimp with like a cabbage wrap and some beef balls. Haha. He did not especially like it and said it was probably the weirdest thing he ate here. We asked what the balls were and sean pointed down towards his loins haha. What a funny kid. He really reminds me of mange. Anyways after that we got lost going back to my hotel, but finally some nice people helped us and we got back. Benjamin got a little sick from the curry pizza he had for lunch or the beef balls or the combination of both of them with soccer. That was pretty funny for me and miserable for him. Poor guy. =P

Tuesday, we just bummed around. We went to mong kok for lunch. It was delicious. We went to this place called pokka café or something like that. It was a little pricey but really delicious. I got some beef and chicken (western style) and Benjamin got some curry (this was now his third meal of curry since he arrived. I got us some sushi too which came after we were full from our meal. I still enjoyed it even though Benjamin did not. I really have liked all the sushi I have had here. I think I will start buying some for dinners sometimes. Anyways. Then we shopped around mong kok and then went to HKI to go to Victoria Park –since I had not been there. It was alright. Again I have not been that impressed with the parks and gardens here in hk. But it was still pretty to walk around. They had very nice sport places and 4 soccer courts I think. We also found some “foot massage” pebble paths. They did not massage my feet!! They hurt! Maybe it was because I walked barefoot on it ---later we saw signs that said not to do this. Oops. Stupid tourists. Anyways then we went back and got ready to go on this dinner cruise thing. Good thing we left early for it because I was given bad directions. But we found it and was on time too. The food was not as good as at the RR6, but after quickly eating we went up to the top of the boat and that was very pretty and I enjoyed standing and watching the city from Victoria Harbor for a few hours.

Haha oh yeah and some artist guy sketched Benjamin and my picture for free. He made me look a lot like Fabio though. I guess when he signed it he didn’t mention which was the handsome gentleman and beautiful girl. I think I look more manly than Benjamin. Overall, the guy was funny and I think this sketch is funny. I sure hope I don’t usually look like that, but oh well I probably do. How depressing!

After the cruise we had time to stop by Temple street market. Benjamin got his mom a gift and then finally found some shoes and we just had fun walking around the market. He bought a shirt too –I like it a lot. I think I will have no problem finding some gifts to bring back to him =)

I was very sad that Benjamin could not stay an extra day since he got here so late. And today (Wednesday) it poured!!! It was some typhoon warning 1 or something so tomorrow it will rain a lot too. We were planning on going to kowloon park, but instead because of the rain went to the avenue of stars and wandered around the mall near there –it is the largest one in hk, I think it is harbour city or something. Anyways. After that Benjamin had to leave. That was very sad. I am sad now, but tomorrow my parents come so that will comfort me a little. I still don’t know what we will do, I guess we will find out. Once Benjamin left, I went to work and worked a couple hours. I was glad I worked extra last Friday so I could hang out with him before he left. Then I went running and now I have been writing this journal entry that has gotten too long!! Ugh. i will talk to you all later...those of you still reading --i know i have stopped paying attention

I am sad so enjoy pictures of cute young school kids at ocean park

this was so cute, their teacher told them to say "a, b, c, d, eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" precious!!

Hong Kong Day 26:

Since Benjamin’s flight got cancelled –and as far as I know/hope he is in the air right now coming to visit, I will take a break from work and update you all on my oh-so-exciting life (BLAH!).

So last night was alright. I was in the worst mood!! ---sooo grouchy! I definitely was a pill to be around. Everyone from the reu group –including our own dr. fairweather went down to Victoria harbor/ avenue of stars to watch the light show. I think I liked watching it from the revolving restaurant better than at the harbor. And although the light show wasn’t the most exciting thing I have ever seen ---remember I don’t even get impressed by fireworks (yeah yeah im a drag), the music was FANTASTIC though Hahahahaahaha. Oh man. Anywho I still enjoyed watching the city lights at night.
There are pics (warning some are very blurry!) here on my facebook album: http://tayloru.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2006229&l=2f3c0&id=179200873

Then we went to this German bar. Since they had food everyone decided to eat there too, but I could not find anything worth eating that wasn’t like 100 hk dollars. (a little exaggeration, but still!!). So mike was a nice guy and walked with me until we found a mcdonalds –brianne, I did not eat a cheeseburger, but I had a very good hamburger and chocolate shake. =) then we went back. The problem was that we all wanted to watch the USA vs Ghana game, but all the bars only were showing the Italy vs. Chezch rep. (however you abbreviate that country). I don’t blame the bars. People hate Americans and besides the Italy game was going to be better. So we walked around trying to find a bar. Mike and I went ahead and look around the area, but alas we could not find any. So mike and I went back to a quiet bar to watch it. Kinnex informed me that I was very boring because I did not order any alcohol or even a soft drink. I did not feel like spending money especially since Benjamin was coming the next day. Anyways I really enjoyed watching the italy game and enjoyed cheering for italy. I expected that mike and I would meet up with the others at half time, but Mike didn’t seem to want to and I was pleased with the large screen and somewhat quiet atmosphere of the bar. I also enjoyed being able to explain things to mike as we watched the game. Granted I still think he hates soccer, but maybe he at least could appreciate it a little… prolly not. But then after the game we left and went back here. I was excited because I thought I was going to see Benjamin.

Unfortunately the next morning I did not check my email because I was getting stuff ready to see Benjamin. So I didn’t know until I was at work that his flight had been cancelled. It sounds like a lot of crap that he had to deal with. I think he was on the plane for 6 hrs before they decided to cancel the flight. How frustrating. My poor little boyfriend haha. He was pretty livid here is some of an email he sent me
“We got on the plane to Hong Kong, sat at the gate for about an hour and half waiting for "traffic to clear", then we got out there and they realized Fuel was spilling out of one of the wings. So they cleaned up that fuel..that took another good solid hour. Then we went out to the runway to take off...and they realized more fuel had spilled ...so they spent another hour checking it again....then they said we were about to leave......then after another hour of sitting there they said "we've burned too much fuel to make it to Hong Kong now, we're cancelling the flight." So then we sat for another 2 HOURS just waiting for them to take us back to the gate so we could at least get off the plane. So all in all I spent about 6 hours today sitting on the damn O'Hare tarmack doing shit nothing and sure not getting any closer to you. This is such a giant load. Oh and then just to add insult to injury we waited over an hour for them to give us our hotel passes, and then waited another hour and half for a shuttle to come pick us up for the hotel. No one has ever butchered anything as badly as they have done all day.”

Aww, I hope he can stay an extra day after all this trouble. Anyways, after finding out about all that, I was sad and it was hard to work, but it is ok. I came back from work and continued to work most of the evening –except for a break to run for 50 mins woo woo haha. I will wake up tomorrow and work some. Then I am hoping to maybe take a day off next week if Benjamin can stay an extra day. But that has left me with an OH SO EXTREMELY boring evening. I think meghan and sam went shopping. I let andrea use my cityu pass to use the pool with Chelsea, but Chelsea got sick. And has been sick all evening. So mike came over and watched crash with her. I like that movie a lot so I watched bits and pieces as I worked. I hope she feels better.

Tomorrow most people are going to a beach and some are going to macau, and guangming is going to mainland china –I think. I will not go because I will wait for Benjamin to get in. instead I will wake up work a few hours. Maybe walk over to cityU and use their pool for a few hours before going to meet Benjamin at his hotel. Poor guy he has been in the same clothes for the past few days. Anways hopefully you wont here from me in a while whilst I entertain my boo. Meanwhile here are links to my pictures from ocean park and some of my hk friends.

Hong Kong Day 25

I am about to go out to watch the light show and then go to a bar with the reu group to watch usa play possibly their last game (hopefully not!!) =) Benjamin comes tomorrow so I do not know how much I will keep this updated. You should check back after a few days---but maybe you will get lucky and i will at least post some pictures =)

Me on the MTR (subway)

Lunch at Korean Restaurant

from left to right: Michael, Henry, Me, Chelsea, Kyler, and Kurt =) kurt and Micheal and henry later played soccer with me!

Hong Kong Day 24:

Today was the best day of work. We worked with our proof that for the DR case there are n+1 roots. It was my kind of math stuff ---proving stuff. dr. sun even said good. Chelsea did not hear it, but I swear he told us softly (maybe begrudgingly) good. For lunch we left to meet Henry and some of his classmates, Kyler, Kurt, and Michael. His English is very good and it was a lot of fun. They took us to a Korean restaurant and we had food there that was the closest thing to American Chinese food. I got this fried chicken that was close to redish golden chicken at the mall. Chelsea got this fried rice with pineapple and chicken. Henry had a sore throat so he had a mask on when we first see him, but then he took it off when he saw us. that made me glad. I did not want him to have to wear mask. I also had some soy milk at the restaurant. It was just alright –strange tasting for someone who does not really like milk. I took some pictures of me on the MTR (subway) when it was not crowded.

After work I went over and played soccer –sort of. I did not get to play much because we kept getting kicked off the courts. Also henry had the game at 4 so I came late because I worked until 5. It was ok. we went to some other courts I had never been too. Again we got kicked off. So we played cards for a bit (I happened to have my princess cards with me ---the guys LLLLOOOVVVEEEDDD that ugh). Kenneth, Michael, and Kurt all played basketball with a guy who was there named Howard. I made everyone who was waiting for the soccer court -except tony because he did not want to- go play basketball. It was a lot of fun. I am still horrible even when I play with shorter people. I did make 1 basket. Then we played soccer against a group of really good guys. They had amazing touch and footwork and had good spacing as a team. I was impressed. We did ok too I thought. Some went out to eat, but I did not because of personal reasons. It was overall a good day. Tomorrow some of us are going to a bar to watch the game. It should be fun. I hope the usa wins.

Hong Kong Day 23

Today we worked and then all of us except john and guangming went to lok fu to get food and then I was going to take the girls to garden street to buy clothes. I tried not to buy anything, but I could not resists getting a few tops. They all fit too. Hurrah! We had a hard time finding it because I forgot which exit it was from: it is from Exit B3. I must remember. We ended up walking around in some of the shadier part of Mong Kok, but it was all good. I like to shop but my back got tired. Haha. For dinner mike nick and I went to this grocery/department store and they had a food place. I was so lost. I could not figure out how to get what I wanted to eat. An old lady finally went up to me and grabbed my arm and showed me where to order and pay for my food. After a while it finially came and was pretty good. Typical of the Chinese food I get here. Fried noodles with beef. It also came with some green veggies. I am tired. Tomorrow Chelsea and I will meet Henry (a soccer kid I have met) for lunch. Then after work I will go play soccer. They are actually playing at 4, but I work until 5 so I will be late. I hope they are still playing when we get there. Anyways im exhausted so I think I will go to bed and I will leave you with the words my sister left me:

OuttaTheBlue101: I will let you go then, dearheart

Hong Kong Day 19 (finally) /22

Right now I am in a state of eternal bliss. I splurged and bought myself a milk chocolate dove bar –my favorite candy bar =) I am so happy that they actually had it at the store –their selection of candy bars is not a vast as in the us –although they have a lot more foreign brands. I was kinda in the mood for a Take 5 bar, but was delighted to find a dove bar. Ahhh. I think I will finally talk about Ocean Park. First though, I will quote some of what I told Dr. Fairweather in my Week 3 Reflections email:

“Week 3:
This was our first full week of work. We continued to read a lot of papers and met several times with Dr. Fairweather. We also had our first presentation in front of the class. Maybe next time we will have more to present? We shall see, after today it is not looking so hot. Work is still frustrating, but I know that is how research is. I just wish things came more quickly to us. I am tired of not being sure what our project’s ultimate goal is. Today Dr. Sun gave us a little bit of a better idea. We are going to try to discover how to solve Poisson equations for RR, DR, and other boundaries using the Finite Difference method and the Finite Element method. Right now we are working on the DR case and proving that there exists n +1 roots. I am not sure how to do this without fixing alpha or n. Blah blah so boring so boring –hate my life as Jess would say-- I worked some on my own this Saturday and Friday night and it made me appreciate having Chelsea to work with.

On the culture side of things, here are a few highlights. People here eat fried chicken using plastic gloves. Most people here do not know how to swim officially –when they are young they do not take lessons like in the US. Many HK people who are 15 to 20-something keep their relationships (boyfriends and girlfriends) a secret from their parents. This is because the parents are afraid that having a boyfriend or girlfriend will make their daughters or sons get lower marks in school. Right now many 18 and 19 year old kids are nervously waiting for the results of a standardized test which will determine if they can go to college or not. Macau Island has a beach with black sand. The style of clothing is very different and it is hard to shop for clothes because you are not allowed to try clothes on in the shops. Sometimes you can try on pants, but most stores do not have fitting rooms. If you must ride one of the public light mini buses, ride a red one. This is because the bus driver for these gets paid by how many people ride his bus, so he will drive a little faster. The green mini bus drivers are paid an annual salary so they do not care how fast they go or how many passengers they pick up. When the buses exceed 80 km/hr there is a warning beeping signal –most red drivers ignore it and some even rig the speedometer so that the speedometer is less sensitive to the change in speed. I went to a local beach and saw models having their pictures taken. I do not think they were that high class of models. I would have taken a picture if I had my camera…maybe they would want me to be in the picture too because of my “hot bod” haha yeah right!! =D HK has immigrants from china just like how the US has immigrants from Mexico. One of my friend’s mother was one such immigrant who came to Macau by boat before meeting a HK man to marry. Golden beach is a man-made beach that is not one of the best beaches. One of the best beaches is only accessible by boat. It is in half moon bay near Sai Kung. There the water is supposedly so clear you can see the bottom. I really like green tea ice cream. I am always impressed by how fast our food comes at a restaurant. I think that many restaurants here would be shut down by the Health department in the States. The locals never put their bags on the floor because they say it is too dirty. Furthermore, they wash their plates, chopsticks, and bowls in the complimentary hot tea because they say they are dirty!! When you answer your cell phone in Hong Kong, say a phrase that sounds exactly like ‘why.’
-Amanda”

Anywho Ocean Park is an alright amusement park. Here is my overall opinion. Because it tries so hard to do so many things, it loses some of the quality. It is like a Great America, Sea World, Zoo, Busch Gardens, Carnival, and little kid park all rolled into one. The rides are not as good as in the States and the water show is not good as any of the sea world shows in the states (granted it has been a while since I was last at sea world –so maybe I just don’t remember sea world being lame, but Shamu or whatever you call that big killer whale is pretty awesome =P. Some of the zoo parts of Ocean Park were pretty cool though (even though there are not many animal exhibits). I enjoyed seeing the pandas and the jelly fish. For the price, Ocean park is very good. I only paid 152 HK dollars for my ticket. I do not know if I got a student rate or some type of discount, but compared to the parks in the States, this was a lot of entertainment for not a huge cost. I do not think I will go to Disneyland here. The soccer kids said that it is not as good as Ocean Park and is more expensive and that more people choose to go to Ocean Park.

To get to ocean park, I met Kinnex and Pui at Sham Shi Po or something like that –wherever the golden computer place is. We went to a local place to eat breakfast. They both got noodle stuff and I got an egg and ham sandwich. This was ham and eggs in 2 slices of bread. It came with a little piece of paper. I was not sure what to do with it and Kinnex told me it was to hold the sandwich. –Side note: people here are very concerned about handling their food, remember the fried chicken deal…yeah very strange, very strange…-- then we met at Central I think and all of us got on a bus to go to ocean park. The people who went were Tony, Ho, Me, Pui, Sean, Kinnex, Jason and his adorable girlfriend named Cindy, Kenneth, Dennis, Justin, and two guys I had never met before… their names were Paul and Chenny (I probably hosed up that spelling!!) There are only 2 rollar coasters. I would say they were below average on the scale of Great America’s coasters. I liked the big drop though –it was good and I liked the rocking boat, but again I am used to more intense rides. It was still a lot of fun =) It was soooooo incredibly hot though. I was like a fountain!! Haha haha, sob =/ Anyways. We would go into places just because it had air conditioning. We had fried chicken for lunch which was not the best but cheaper than what it would have cost at a US park. There was a virtual reality ride thing like Body Wars (which I love hahaha) in Disney World. It was the thing that made me feel the most sick –mostly from the strange jerking and bright lights haha. I am going to post a picture of all of us except kinnex (he went somewhere else for a while ---I don’t even want to know for what reason haha!) before we went into the “caves of darkness” haha Sean said it was very stupid. I will not argue with that!! After the park we went to a mall food court. It was fun. Then I went back and ran for 45 mins because the people from my math group all went out for 10 dollar coronas. Then I worked a bit to make up for the day.

I just found out that Bob (Bob Gorbold) is getting married. Too bad I have a soccer game that day. Although with how the soccer coach thing is going who knows if I will even play. And even then maybe I will miss the game because it is my senior year and I have put up with a lot of crap and if I want to go to a wedding then I think I will and they can just deal with it. I am pretty angry about the soccer situation at school. They refuse to reply to my emails. What jerks! Boo on them. I am getting angry so I think I better go run.

We are not as cute as the baby....but we try

Hong Kong Day 21: Beach

Today I woke up and attempted to run at 10:45am. It was sooo hot!! I could not run for very long. Then I ate a PB&J sandwich and met Kinnex, Sean, Pui, Kenneth, Colman, and a new guy I had not met named Vincennes but I just called him Vic. They went to KFC to eat and then we all went to a beach near Kinnex’s house. Kenneth and some of the others told me that this is not a very great beach in HK. It is actually artificial –man made- I think. It was fine. Because it was Sunday, it was pretty crowded. When we got there. We set down our things. They bought a little mat to sit on. It was different from what my friends would bring. If we were going we would have just brought a big blanket or all used our towels. We walked over to the volleyball courts to try to play. I was the only white “westerner” as the HK peeps say. Everyone stared. It was embarrassing. We didn’t actually play vb because the courts were full, so we just bumped the ball around and played monkey in the middle using the ball as a soccerball. Then we went into the water. I was rather sad because all day it was very sunny and then it clouded up by the time we got to the beach. I was worried about going to the beach. But the water is sooooo much warmer here than in the oceans at the usa –and especially lake Michigan!! I had no problem getting in while the other guys were complaining how cold the water was. The water did not seem extremely clean and I could not see the bottom. But it was so warm and felt nice still. Then we played cards and we watched a cute fat asian baby playing near us. I thought them hearts and they taught me (sorta) an asian game. I think I would have to play again to learn it well. It was very strange at the beach…there were more men than girls. Which is very different from the beaches near me. There were also a lot of umbrellas around. Oh and it was so awesome. there were a lot of models –or low class models- getting their pictures taken by the beach. They were mostly Asians but also I think there was a more western looking girl too. They had props and stuff and it was quite humorous and fascinating at the same time. If I had my camera at the time I would have taken pictures. We left around 6 and went to a Malaysian restaurant in mong kok. To get there, we took a bus. A red bus which they told me meant that it would go faster because he would speed because he gets paid by how many people ride his bus. It was interesting. The restaurant was very delicious. I got some beef in white curry and rice. And we had some shrimp spring rolls and some fried squid that were good. At the bottom of the squid basket, there was something that looked like stirafone (spelling). It was white and looked like it was decoration. Kinnex asked me if I had ever eaten it. I thought he was joking, but then he and the others started eating it. So I ate it. It was like a chip and very good. Sean and kinnex got a dessert soup thing and Vic got a delicious green tea chocolate shake. It was wonderful so I ordered it, but they messed it up and just gave me some green tea ice cream with some chocolatish balls around it. It was excellent. Then I went home and sean walked me back to the hotel even though I said I was ok. Colman said that it is not good to walk alone, but I do not feel scared here. Either way it was nice to have the company. Tomorrow it is back to work. Woo. =/

PS happy fathers day!!

Hong Kong Days 18 & 20: (19 comes later)

Sorry it has been a while….

On Thursday, I met Kenneth and his friend Ivy to go shopping for clothes. It was so nice of them to take me to show me where to find inexpensive clothes that the locals buy. First we went to this local restaurant –yes there were dead chickens in the window and chicken feet in the soup. The soup was good though and none of us ate the chicken feet. We also shared rice, some good leafy/stalky/green vegetable, some delicious fried fish in some cheesy corn sauce and some chicken. I guess this restaurant is famous for its chicken. I did not eat the chicken though because it had bone and I struggle with eating off the bone here. The fish was sooo yummy though =). Then we went to garden market. It was hard to shop though because of many reasons. First, Kenneth stayed with us because Ivy wanted him to –I understand because she did not really know me- and I do not like to shop in front of guys (Benjamin is ok, but others when I am shopping for myself I get nervous). Second, these shops don’t let you try things on. No shirts. And only rarely pants. Third, Ivy is very pretty and small and definitely had a different sense of style than me, I was very embarrassed to choose things that I liked. Fourth, all of the clothes –especially pants- made me feel like a fat American cow. The problem is, I am small in the usa so I kinda expect to be a small or medium here, not a large…it makes me self-esteem kinda low =P haha. I wanted to buy a blue shirt and green skirt, but we decided to go to a mall near Prince Edwards first. That mall was crazy. It had so many shops all scrunched into small areas. Again only a few shops allowed you to try on pants. I almost got a green pair, Kenneth told me to buy them, but ivy told me that they were too tight. I probably should have gotten them but ivy psyched me out =) later I remembered that here the style is loose while in the usa the style is tight-fitting. Anyways I did not buy anything and it made me depressed. We went back to garden street but it was closed. So that ended my first attempt at hk clothes shopping! It was still fun and interesting to talk with ivy and see other styles. It is hard for me to accept that people here do not share the same fashions as in the US.

Today after work (I worked on Saturday to make up for the day I went to ocean park), I went back to garden street and got a lot of clothes for not a lot of money. The most expensive thing I bought was a skirt for 60 hk dollars (so this was like 8.50 us dollars or something like that). I tried to get different things, but some are pretty typical. I got a dress that is cute and a strange “peasant long shirt thing.” Mike and I got separated from the rest of the group, which was ok because they all went to ladies market and I wanted to go to garden street. It was good to have mike with me, he made me feel safer as we wandered around trying to find garden street –we got out of the wrong exit. Finally we found it and I sent him away to do his own shopping so that he would not be bored and so I could shop in peace haha. It was good that we both have cells so that we could meet once we were finished. He bought a lot of cheap dvds. And then we just ate kfc because it was quick and easy. Around Mong Kok there were soooo many people just wandering around. Today was also a very sunny day that was hot and not rainy. Too bad I had to work. The other math students were going to go to the beach, but everyone slept in too much.

I am much too tired to write about Friday. I will do that tomorrow before I go to the beach. Goodnight!

Me in the Market

Hong Kong Day 17: Temple Street Market

Today work went late because we had presentations that lasted 2 hours. That was nice…haha. Afterwards all of us but guangming went to the Temple Street Market. To get here you get off at the Jordan. This market runs from 7pm-11pm. It is called Men’s street or Men’s market I think. I liked it better than Ladies market because the sale people are not as buggy and pesty. There are different things here and some very crude joke type things.

But man! the old men at this market were so strange! I had Michael take my picture and an old man behind me said, “ahhh SEX!” I suppose he meant sexy, he made me and Michael laugh. Later I asked Michael what he had bought from the market and as he opened his bag to show me his purchase, an old man came about 2 feet away to see it too. Michael had bought a cd of Cantonese Love Songs. The old man winked, gave us the thumbs up sign and said very good! Haha. Anyways I bought a necklace and bracelet for a total of 10 us dollars. I like them and some postcards –which I need to send soon! Gosh I am horrid! Mike, Michael, Meghan, Andrea, Sam, and Chelsea went to a bar down a few stations because it was ladies drink free night. I left to go back and talk to Benjamin =) and relax here. I made it back all by myself from Jordan to Kowloon Tong!! I am so good!

Tomorrow I am going to meet one of Kenneth’s hk girl friends to go shopping. I am nervous but I hope it goes ok. She is worried I will not fit in the clothes. Perhaps she thinks all American girls are porkers!! Haha but I am nervous too!! I just hope I don’t make too much of a fool of myself.
PS. We ate at a restaurant in festival walk and their water that they served had apples in them instead of lemon or lime. It was weird. Also a few days ago Chelsea and I saw 4 tiny asian kids doing a dance in the middle of festival walk. It was so strange and rather funny. The kids were sooo thin and doing lots of dancing of moving their hips. I cannot explain it. Maybe when I get back to the usa, I will demonstrate. Anywho I should get ready for bed =)

Very Shwanky Ladies!

Michael wants to look cool too

I need to get me one of these =)

Hong Kong Day 16:

I actually was able to sleep well last night! So that made my day start off well. Too bad usa lost. But I suppose that was expected. Anywho, today was a very good day. At work we got a program to work (at least we thought so). And to celebrate we popped some popcorn. Man I have missed popcorn. This wasn’t the best popcorn but it was still good. After work, we ate at the hotel restaurant. We asked for the noodle dish without soup and instead with fried rice and it was excellent. I was upset with the service though. It was somewhat busy, but six other tables got seated after us and each of them got their food before us. and they didn’t fill up our tea when we drank it all. I was very annoyed especially because I was going to play soccer right after dinner and it took a lot longer than expected. So after dinner I went to play soccer at 7 (15 mins late, but not a big deal at all!). we played against some good teams and it was fun. They are always impressed whenever I do something good. Hong Kong girls do not play soccer I guess, and they don’t normally ride roller coasters either. (lame!!) haha but they are too beautiful I guess to play sports or ride crazy rides. Oh well. Anyways we played for a long time and then went to a restaurant and watched the end of the korea vs togo world cup game. It was exciting because korea won after being down 1. it was strange. The guys said that the restaurant was very dirty so they cleaned out the bowls and chopsticks and spoons before eating. That is so strange because in the usa, that restaurant would not be allowed to run –at least I doubt people would eat there. I didn’t eat since I had had dinner and because even after 2 weeks of being here, my chopstick abilities are HORRENDOUS!! I demonstrated my superb chopstick skills by eating some common vegetable and well it went so well that I did not eat anything else. almost all of the guys walked me back to my hotel “to protect me” haha how sweet and nice. It was definitely unnecessary but I enjoy their company so I will not complain. But it is midnight and I better get to sleep.

Hong Kong Day 15

I have a cell phone now. The number is 95334308, in hk the numbers are 8 digits not 7. now I can be cool and have a cell glued to my ear like all the locals here. This will also be convenient for when benj and my family come visit.

Today at work, we just read things and met with Dr. Fairweather. Dr. Sun did not seem upset and said for this week we need to just work at understanding all the papers we have been given. It is still very difficult, but slowly getting easier each time I read things. We went grocery shopping afterwards and Chelsea and I got a lot of food for the week.

After work I decided to try doing some sprints. Man!! I am soooooooo out of shape. It is so pathetic. I think I run on a track that is about 8 laps per mile. And I would sprint half a lap and jog the rest. I felt sick after 12 mins of this. How pathetic. I kept running until 17 mins then jogged back to the hotel. It was funny though, this old man was walking the opposite direction of me around the track and after I sprinted past him a few times, he stopped and said, you very fast and gave me a thumbs up sign. How adorable, after that moment I tried to run faster when he was in view. Haha.

After running, Kinnex met Andrea, Chelsea, and I and we went to this place where the golden computer arcade store is. This store has all imaginable computer/electronic stuff. All four of us met Pui there because he lives so close. I bought some burnable cds at the store for a lot less than they are in the states. and andrea and Chelsea bought headsets so they can use skype. Skype definitely is the way to go communicate with the US. Then we walked to this mall that was more where the locals go. It was very nice and a lot cheaper than festival walk. I enjoyed talking to Pui and one lady asked him if I was his English teacher. Kinnex had to go feed his girlfriend and then met up with us again and we went to a restaurant. We got a lot of stares because the menu was all in Cantonese and we probably were some of the few Americans who had ever been there. Chelsea got a chocolate shake –though it tasted a lil different. Kinnex did his best to give Andrea a lemonade. He did a good job and she liked it –it was a slushi of some kind. I told him to just get me anything, so he got me this strange shakey drink with watermelon and mango and mango and some other fruits. It was good –very fruity and I had my first mango. It was very yummy. Also for dinner I got some pink guava juice from the store that was fabulous. Anywho I also tried some strange thing that was in kinnex’s drink. It was from Taiwan and tasted kinda like a weird gummy bear. Anyways. After that we had to go, and I need to get to sleep. This past week I have not slept well. I go to bed at midnight or 11:30 and by 2am I still have not fallen asleep. Last night it was so bad I took some of the sleeping pills I used for the plane ride. Unfortunately that made me drowsy in the morning. Ok I will get off now! Buhbye!

Hong Kong Day 14

Today was boring. I had a hard time sleeping last night, so I was a zombie when I had to wake up to go to Dr. Fairweather’s talk. So I went back to the hotel when it was finished and slept until almost 1pm. I then went running and then kicked the soccer ball around with a few kids. I did some crosses and shots with a 12 year old boy and his dad. That was cute. Then I went back showered and putzed around the hotel –I was very bored. While others were at the conference. Then we went to eat at oliver’s sandwiches. Now I am here trying to decide what to do after this rather worthless day. It is a shame that the usa plays at midnight tomorrow. Oh well.

Hong Kong Days 12& 13: Boat Tour, World Cup, and Banquet

I have been watching Scrubs as I catch up on my OH so incredibly interesting online journal haha yeah right. But finally I have found how to watch the world cup. So I will watch that now was I blog about the past two days

Today (actually yesterday) everyone who was invited to the conference was invited to go on a boat tour of Hong Kong. Unfortunately for us, it rained like the whole time. In fact it stormed and lighteninged –haha that is not a word I guess- but it was very cool. I was very proud. It was the first time I had been a boat other than the pontoon boats and speed boats that I have tubed and water skied off of. This boat was definitely rocky, but I did not get sick! =D We didn’t get to see much of a tour of hong kong though because of the rain. Nor did we see the pink dolphins that supposedly inhabit the Hong Kong Area. Our boat by the way looked totally gay. It was really funny, but worked out very nicely. We stopped at a fishing island called Lamma first to just walk around for an hour. It was pouring but we decided to walk 20-25 mins to the beach. I was excited to FINALLY see a beach. I really miss my beach and pool back home. We got soaked, but we did see a place where we could have swam if it were nice. Mike mentioned that it was hilarious to see a beach full of people under umbrellas, I guess I agree. Then some walked ahead to the other side of the island to where we were going to eat, I walked back to the boat because I was not feeling seasick. Finally we arrived to where we would eat lunch. It was impressive to see all the fish, etc. in tanks. Our lunch was quite impressive. We had shrimps with their legs and eyes still on them and some scallops in seashells that were really good. There were mussels (which were spicy), some type of crab (which were hard to eat), fish (which was delicious despite the fact that it had its head there staring you in the face), fried calamari (which was chewy but good), some type of sweet and sour pork, fried rice, pineapple.. it was all very good for the most part except I didn’t like the chicken (maybe because it still had its head as well). Kinnex later told me that this is done because it makes the food prettier –aka adds to the presentation of the food. Yeah, that may be so in other culture, but that sure aint what we American students thought. It didn’t bother me too much –the shrimps were the grosses with their black eyes. After dinner the weather cleared a little and we went back. I saw a floating dinner place that was tackily decorated, but still looked kinda cool.

Everyone was tired after the boat trip so most of us tried to rest and nap. Then we all got dressed up and went to Central HKI to go find a place to eat. We did this because almost everyone wanted to go clubbing in the clubs near Central. We went to Heaven on Earth. I wouldn’t say that it was as good as it name made us believe. I got some fried rice with pork which was good I guess. Overall it had pretty good food, but no refills on ice tea or pop…that was very annoying –especially for a “big drinker” like myself. After dinner, those who went clubbing –went. And I went back with john and nick to go back. I was planning on meeting some of my soccer friends to watch the opening match of the world cup at midnight (hong kong time). On the subway back to the stop near HKBU, I met two pretty young girls who said they were 18, but I think they were younger –probably 10ish? The little girls made my night though. They told me that I was so beautiful and kept wanting to look at my eyes –I guess since they are blue and not brown like everyone here =). We chatted a little bit, their English was pretty good and a nice lady helped translate a little. The lady said that I was so nice and we talked too and she asked for my number so that she could introduce me to other people (or something?), but since I don’t have one, I could not give her it. Figures a woman would want my digits hehe =) she was really nice.

Anywho since where I am is in the middle of where the soccer people can meet –I guess and since it seemed like they were looking for a place to watch (I think?) we went to my place to watch it. There were five of them who came, which was good –too many more could have been very cramped. Kinnex, Tony, Sean, Kenneth, and Pui. Pui is Kinnex’s neighbor and good friend. He hurt his knee so he doesn’t play soccer with us, but I like him, he seems like a good kid. His name is pronounced like boy only with a p so like “poy.” They were a little nervous that my hotel would not let them in, but it was no problem. It was a lot of fun watching the game with them. Kinnex had brought snacks and we showed each other pictures online. After the game, they stayed until 3 when Chelsea came back from the clubs. They thought me two new card games and just talked about stuff. For example I asked about what the ideal attractive Hong Kong girl is described as. I told them in the states I was under the impression that the ideal pretty girl is tall thin tan with long blonde hair blue eyes and big boobs –at least more or less that is what I think the stereotypical “hot babe” is like. They said that in hong kong, the girl is not super tall, very thin, small breasted, pale, with big eyes, and long black hair. I have seen a lot of these girls running around. =) they also said that girls in HK are very worried about their weight –it seemed even more so than in the US. they take pills and do lots of crazy things (similar to in the states with bulimia and anorexia). I think that is crazy because like everyone here seems just naturally thin. In fact, I know I am somewhat thin in the usa, but here I feel a little fat. Anywho that was a long tangent sorry. Anyways it was a lot of fun and they seem to have similar good tastes in humor so that we all had a lot of fun and I did not regret not going to the clubs in the least –even though it sounds like everyone had a blast doing that too.

We went to bed around 4 and I woke up at 11am to go to lunch –I skipped the morning conference sessions. Then I went to the last few sessions before we got ready to go to the banquet. We went to this awesome restaurant on a high skyscraper on HKI. http://www.hongkongfoodguide.com/cgi-bin/search.pl?command=read&id=w1&l=e sorry I didn’t find a better site, im lazy and tired right now. Anways the view was amazing and the food was sooo good. It was buffet so I overate, but it was delicious sushi and desserts and lots of other food. Magnificent!! Anways then we got back here and I talked with benj. I tried to find a place to watch the world cup, but didn’t feel like walking to a bar to see the second half of the England game. Silly hong kong and their channels it is almost as bad as in the usa. Anywho, the game is still 0-0, but im fading so I think I will close here with only one more thing: reminder to self: talk about the Italian and belguim guy in the lift (elevator).

Hong Kong Day 11 (somewhere along here I got confused on the day)

Today we woke up early to go the mathematics conference. WOW that was PAINFUL. It was way over my head (except the first one) and it is international so we were listening to Italians, Belguims, Chinese, German, etc. people speaking in English about mathematics. It is hard to understand that math and it doesn’t help when their English is not very good….furthermore some of the slides were poorly done with dark backgrounds with dark writing so it was hard to read them. Most of us left the conference early and I don’t think I will go to many this weekend. Tomorrow is a boat tour of Hong Kong so that will be fun. Everyone else from our group when to Festival Walk to go eat and watch the DaVinci Code. Since I had seen it and already made plans to play soccer, I didn’t go and instead did laundry and then went and played soccer from 7-10ish. Then we went to mcdonalds. It was fun. I really enjoy hanging out with these guys, they are good people. We are getting more used to each other so we are able to joke around with each other and slowly get sarcasm in there. It is really good. But I better get to bed its already midnight!

Hong Kong Day 9:

Hi today was ok. Work was not the best. We couldn’t figure anything out and last night I could not sleep for some reason. I just could not shut off my mind and get comfortable. Boo on that! So the first part of the morning the only thing I felt like i could focus on was where I could take a nap hehe. But I woke up a lil bit more later. We actually left and talked with Dr. Fairweather about our project and he reinforced some of what Dr. Sun had told us, but it was still rather beyond us. it is hard because it is graduate level work and even Dr. Fairweather isn’t surprised that we are struggling. He said it is tough even if we have had courses about it. Anywho we got back and laid down a bit before getting ready for the reception for the conference we are all going to on Structured Matrices. Sounds exciting eh? Anywho that is going on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. And Friday we are all going on a boat cruise around Hong Kong. That sounds fun, and it will be a nice break from work.

The reception was fun, it was a dinner and I enjoyed chatting with some of the REU people (well us kids and Dr. Fairweather). The food was good, I tried some pumpkin cream soup which was really good and the fruit was good –even this thing that looked like a white kiwi. It is funny though, they misspelled my name. My name tag and name in the program says Amnad Harsy from Taylor University. Hehe. It goes well with benjamin’s misspelled name, Benchman Randy. I am surprised they didn’t spell it Amnada cus that sounds more like a girl. I guess they had mistyped my name earlier and Dr. Sun had emailed Dr. Fairweather asking if Amnad was a girl or boy. Haha. After the conference we tried to use our new ID cards to get into the gym. They wont let us. that is really annoying to us. what does it take to let us lift some weights?? Boo on that. Later Andrea, Chelsea, Nick, and I all watched the pilot of Arrested Development (I have a bunch of episodes on my computer). It was fun and Chelsea and Andrea seemed to like it. I hope we can watch more of them. =) we have to wake up early tomorrow for the conference so I should go.
Oh some add-ons from yesterday’s post. I found out that Kinnex, Tony, Sean all took the bus for about an hour to meet us for lunch. That is soooo nice. Kinnex said he would do it again sometime. I hope so, it was a lot of fun. Also Tony taught me a new face to use on IM conversations, =.= that is the face, I didn’t understand what it was for a while. I asked Tony about it and he didn’t know how to explain it. He said it wasn’t happy or sleepy or just a face like sean has when we take pictures. He said that it is like speechless. He also said that from yahoo's dictionary "=.=" means "cannot help it; to have no alternative; to have no choice". It still confuses me. =.=

Hong Kong Day 8: Sushi and Ladies

Today was a good day. Last night I got sick (maybe something I ate, so I went in to work a little late) I feel better now. We figured out a big thing at work and got new stuff to work on. Only we don’t really understand that. Our prof said that if we understood what we just finished, we will understand this (yeah we didn’t and now we don’t). it is frustrating because we are working on work that Dr. Fairweather, our prof, and 4 other professors worked on. It is a lot more advanced than anything we ever did. I feel like we wont find anything worth writing or presenting about. Oh well, tomorrow is another day to fumble around with finite difference methods to solve differential equations.

We met Kinnex, Sean, and Tony for lunch. They took us to Lok Fu, the shopping mall near the soccer courts and took us to a local Japanese restaurant. The whole menu was in Chinese so we were lucky to have them with us. They ordered a few meals and we all split it. They ordered 3 noodle dishes, some sushi, and just in case we hated all the local food -a western meal (or spare riblets and fries I think). It was so much fun. And off of this food was only 150 HK dollars for all 5 of us. So all together it was about 4 dollars for a delicious meal. I enjoyed all of it. I should have others order stuff for me more often. I had weird mushrooms and raw eel wrapped in seaweed, raw crab with crab eggs, raw salmon, shrimp, and some other pinkish fish. It was very good. I had an embarrassing moment though. We had been talking about summer jobs and Kinnex asked me, “what do you do with your salary?” Only I thought he had asked, “what do you do with your celery?” So I answer enthusiastically, “oh we put peanut butter on it and eat it, though I eat it raw sometimes. Sometimes we cut it up and put it in salads or put it in casseroles. I think they put it with tuna a lot. Why do you ask? How do you eat your celery” The boys looked pretty confused so Chelsea said, “Oh I don’t think that is what they asked.” Man I am blonde! I was wondering why he was asking me about celery. =) anyways it was good. They asked me about watching the DaVinci Code, Tony had read the book and seen the movie. I told them it was good, but long. Chelsea and I think Tony has the best English of the guys. She said that she noticed the others looking to him to help them understand what we were saying. They speak so nice and softly it makes me feel as though I talk too loud, I think I will work on that. Anyways lunch took a little longer, but it was ok. It was so much fun.

Later after struggling to understand a paper about what we are working on we went back and tried to get into the workout place at HKBU, but we couldn’t because we don’t have Ids. I hope they give us some soon im tired of doing pushups and squats. So I went running instead. Sam, nick, guangming, john, and Michael decided they wanted to go get Indian food. They didn’t tell us about it until it was too late for us to go. That was rather sad for the rest of us, especially because they took dr. fairweather with. So instead those of us left behind, Meghan, Andrea, Chelsea, and I went to Ladies market. We had “Iron Mike” be our sugar daddy and pimp us around. He was so fun to have with us to haggle at the markets. He would tell them, “oh no this girl here, she has purses up her wazoo, she don’t need no more purses!!” we were all pretty successful, I wont tell what the others bought in case they are presents. I bought a black purse (like the white purse Sam bought –I was kinda worried about copying her, but heck I wont be ever seeing her around after 7 weeks!) I over paid I think, but it was still less than 20 US dollars, so it wasn’t too bad. I also got a necklace and a pretty white skirt. Finally we went home and now here I am.

Hong Kong Day 8: My responsible day

Today was spent mostly at work. I felt like a responsible adult. Chelsea and I worked from 9-5. I ran for 40 mins and did my own laundry! Wow I am bored of myself already!! Anywho, Chelsea and I got bagels at this shop in the mall, it was delicious. Then we spent a lot of time refreshing ourselves on matlab and writing a file to solve this Robin boundary equation thing. Then we graphed things varying different variables. We still don’t really know what we are doing, but it was fun to remember matlab and such. We decided to try City University’s cafeteria. It wasn’t very good. I cant seem to really like Chinese food here. It doesn’t help when Chelsea finds hair in her noodles =P I got roasted pork in rice. It was ok I still don’t like having to eat around the bone and sometimes the meat seems bloody or cold and I gross myself out…even though I am sure it is fine. Afterwards I got a bun to eat and Chelsea bought a stuffed baked potato since she barely ate hers. –poor girl!- she gave me a big compliment today, she said that I seem very optimistic. Normally everyone says im pessimistic. She says she is pretty pessimistic so we both decided to be a lil pessimistic and come up with a top three things we don’t like about hong kong. Here they are:
Chelsea’s:
1) The weather (it isn’t sunny only hot! We sweat for no reason
2) The exhaust (as we walk there is a ton of exhaust from cars buses and taxis
3) The food (it is so hard to find Chinese to like)
Amanda’s
1) Time to workout (it is hard to find a good time to work out with the weather)
2) The weather (similar reasons as chelsea)
3) The math project (it is hard and we don’t know what we are supposed to do)

Anywho, we got sandwiches from the grocery for dinner and some lunch making foods. Then we went back to our rooms. Later we went running in the park. I saw lots of people playing soccer –enough that many teams were waiting in the stands to play. It was good playing. I watched for a few minutes after my run. I didn’t see any of my friends though and I wasn’t on one of the teams so I left. Kinnex emailed me and said we will play Thursday or Friday. Later I did my first load of laundry by hand. I did it in the sink with some Chinese brand detergent. I think it went ok? I will find out tomorrow if all my nice tank tops have spots. Anyways overall, not a lot happening here. I think I will go to bed soon.

Path of Wisdom

giant buddha

Hong Kong Day 7: Rubbing the Giant Buddha

It is official! I have been here for 1 week now. I am beginning to get comfortable with things, but still feel like a tourist sometimes. Well, todaywe went to see the big buddha, and well he was definitely enormous. Unfortunately I couldn’t get close enough to rub his belly for luck, but I guess that was ok. It was worth seeing, but I struggle sometimes with seeing monuments etc. this was still cool. It was very very foggy though. We had to go on 2 different subway lines and a train line to get to the place where we got on the bus to go to the Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island. Did you know that this island is larger than Hong Kong Island and is where Disneyland and the airport are located. Anywho, I didn’t think about this at the time, but the bus ride to the monastery is twice the cost on Sundays. But we didn’t realize that at first –I think I read about it in the guidebook from the library, but I didn’t remember. Anywho, I wore my bathing suit. Who knows why…I heard there were beaches on this island, but I should have known they wouldn’t have been around a monastery…I mean who swims at a monastery –it’s not like they have swim with the monks like they have swim with the dolphins. Anywho, the bus drive was crazy! Our drive went through some of the poorer district of HK so that was interesting. But the route was soo windy and narrow. The buses passed each other so closely –it was rather unnerving! Sometimes the bus would have to wait at a spot while another bus passed. I think they knew when to do this by the use of big convex mirrors and radio communication. Anywho, we did pass beaches, but we didn’t stop. the view was cool, but as we went higher into the mountains on the island it got foggier and foggier. When we got off the bus we couldn’t see more than 10 feet in front of us –let alone any monastery or Buddha! We were pointed in the right direction to see the Buddha and we climbed up a ridiculous number of stairs without being able to see the large Buddha we were approaching. Finally we saw him –but barely. We went and saw some pictures under the Buddha but none of us (by the way Mike, Michael, Nick, Andrea, Sam, Chelsea, Meghan, and I all went on this trip, Guangming had someone else to hang out with or something? And John didn’t go) there is a museum you could go to, but it cost money and didn’t seem that interesting so we didn’t go in it. Then the fog began to lift and we could see the big Buddha a little bit better. Then we left and went across to the monastery. There were lots of places to burn incense. Sam did and prayed at a little prayer chapel. She said that she was not buddist, but just felt compelled to say a prayer. I got photos of it =) she looked like she knew what she was doing and looked good doing it. There were a few monks walking around. They all shave their heads and wear grey robes. You are only allowed to eat vegetarian meals here, but we didn’t stay for dinner.

Then we walked along the Path or Wisdom. It smelled really bad at some points. We walked past the Tea Garden Restaurant which was very small and dinky. hehe, anywho we walked past some tea plants? Or maybe they are called tea bushes? And then we made it up to this place where the fog was very thick and there were circles of tall wooden posts with writing on them. And a brightly colored giant rooster –I don’t know why. Also there were a number of turtle statues around. I don’t know what the connection is between turtles and Buddha, but it seems like there may be some? We stayed rather quiet along the path or wisdom and around the wooden posts of wisdom. Overall the monastery was very peaceful even with the tourists. I could experience the tranquility of the nature. Although all the bright golden buddhas were somewhat strange to me. They seemed almost tacky, and yet impressive at the same time. It was very weird. After our wisdom walk, which I didn’t not feel the wisdom, so maybe I didn’t walk along it well enough or tried to get enlightened and one with the universe like a true Buddhist might. Anyways after the walk we got back on the bus and went back to Festival Wok.

On the train back to the subway, we met a super friendly Chinese man. He talked mostly with Michael and I because he was near us and he liked Michael’s hat. His name was John Lee and he seemed to be a blue collared worker, but he spoke excellent English. It was really impressive. He was really friendly and chatty –the most chatty and friendly asian I have ever met in fact. He told us about his plan to save money enough to start a business of building boats in the Caribbean. He said HK is ok, but he doesn’t like it that much anymore because the population keeps growing but there is no land to hold them. We told him that we were here studying math. He didn’t know what that was, so I don’t think he went to school but I think he is teaching himself English and he is very good. When he didn’t know a word (which seemed pretty infrequent) he asked us to spell it and then he usually understood. He said he would listen to the BBC to get used to hearing and understanding English. =) he was very adorable. He told us that he liked to watch American movies like Entraptment, Zorro, and the Terminal – we think he had a thing for Catherine Zeta Jones =) . He talked about the church he would sometimes go to called St. Andrews church in Kowloon. He said that he liked it and the Austrailian pastor. He asked if we went to church and I said I did back in the states. He told me that I should go to St. Andrews sometime and call him if I decide to go and he will meet me there. Michael asked him if he was a Christian then, and he beamed and said proudly, “Yes I am a Christian and I am very happy.” It was obvious that he implied that his Christianity made him very happy. And I was very pleased because of this. I don’t know if I will go to the church and I don’t think I will call him, but I will always remember him. We left paths when we got on the subway and he left to go buy “a white shirt, 100% cotton!” =) ahh adorable! He gave us his card which said “no job too small!” so I think he is just a hired worker. I really hope he achieves his goals and gets work enough to build boats in the Caribbean.

When we got back to Festival Wok, Meghan left to go clean her skirt that had gotten some mud on it, but the rest of us went to this American Chicago Restaurant. It was delicious and a little pricey, but I enjoyed getting a burger and fries. And ice water! The buns were funny and more breadlike than in the states, but everything was delicious! It was so funny, the menu had a warning on it stating, “ Warning: We Serve American Sized Portions!” As we left I saw many of the locals sharing entrees. It was cute and well kinda embarrassing to be an American =P

We got back here around 9:30 and some of us (Meghan, Mike, Nick, John, Chelsea, and I) all played a game called 22. it was fun. I won the second game =) woo gooo me! Anywho I am not looking forward to work tomorrow, but I guess vacation time is over. Hopefully I can hook up and play some more soccer tomorrow. Have a good Sunday. I am kinda sad, while I am sleeping, my sister will be celebrating her baccalaureate and my family is having a huge party at our house. Congrats to my lil sister!! Way to graduate high school –I know it was rough reading through class and still getting A’s, but way to pull through. We are all sooo proud of you ;) anywho talk to you all later!

steep tram

this is how steep the tram is...it makes the buildings look like they are falling over...

huge snail!! I wanted to pick this one up, but figured i better not =) i dont know exactly where he has been!

Here was the foggy view from the peak!

gross

I forgot, at Hong Kong Park, we found these funny little toilets... mmmmm

Hong Kong Day 6: Victoria Peak

Hi sorry I didn’t post last night, I was so tired. Yesterday I was very sore as I woke up but I still ran for a little bit. I ran to where we can work out (if we pay) the man there said that if we get temp. staff cards we can use their facilities and pool. I will look into that. Around 12:20 we left for Festival Wok. We grabbed sandwiches at this delicious sandwich shop in the mall. Then we took the subway to Admirality. It was soooo packed, we were like sardines –you would never think this many people could be in a subway! I would have taken a picture if I could have gotten my camera out, alas I couldn’t. There we walked to Hong Kong park. This is a nice sized park in the middle of the city. We climbed up a very tall winding steps and then saw a bunch of pretty fountains. One was a mushroom shaped one which you can walk behind. The splashes of the water felt nice because it was so hot –although it wasn’t one of the hottest or most humid days since I had been here. We walked around and we actually saw Asians running around. This was very exciting to me because it meant that not all were able to stay thin and fit looking by just being well asian –although I think these were sport teams =) still… anywho we saw some nice vegetation and a pond. There were some shops there with pretty jewelry with prices ranging from pretty earrings for 1 american dollar to 7 dollars for a big necklace. You can haggle with these people. All of the girls except me bought something. I just didn’t like how the jewelry looked on me (maybe I was having a fat neck day or something?). anyways we walked up these steep winding steps to a lookout observatory where we could see lots of the city. It was a great view and very high. Then we walked through (in what is my personal opinion) the prettiest part of the park. It was lots of cool architecture that was a memorial for Chinese people who had lost their life to illness while working to save others with illness –so like doctors I think. They had lots of face statues around for that and Chinese writing that I couldn’t read. Then we went to this pretty bird observatory place. Here they had lots of birds in a big open area –you may see it in my photo album. It was pretty neat and there are a lot of strange birds in there. I wasn’t worried about getting bird flue because these are like zoo birds –they are not taken out of the observatory –though the observatory was very nice and big with waterfalls and lots of cool trees. It kept dripping water on us. we decided that it must either be 1) the pipes that were really high above us holding up the top roof of the observatory were dripping because of the humidity or more likely 2) the pipes were systematically dripping in order to keep the area wet so the jungle trees got enough moisture. Wow that was boring and unnecessary. Anywho after that we walked across the street to the peak tram station. This was really a neat ride. It only has 1 tram that runs up to Victoria peak and back so you have to wait for it to go up and then back. This is a huge tourist attraction so it can get crowded. Here is the place to sit. On the way up the tram looking up the mountain, sit in the back right corner. On the way down, try to sit in the same spot, only you will be going backwards. This tram ride was slightly rollarcoastery (but not really mom! Don’t worry) it climbs so steeply that the buildings are in a strange angle to you. it really is cool to see. Take pictures as you climb of the city. It is magnificent! Once you get to the top there is a mall/food area with a hagen daz (spelling?) and a fountain. We got up there and it was sooooo foggy. I don’t think it is normally like this, but it was still awesome. we first walked along morning trail and lague (spelling) road. It was very pretty and the fog was very cool, but the view was not the best. We kept seeing lookouts with a picture of what we SHOULD see, but we only saw fog. Then we ate at a Chinese restaurant in the mall –they have some grills and other food places that are twice as much. If you look, you can find some more local food with good pasta or sushi that is a lot less money. The mall is ok but expensive we didn’t stay there much.

After eating we decided to climb the peak. Wow that was soo steep. As we went we saw some huge snails that were cooler than the expensive apartments and mansions up the peak. We finally got to the governors walk and tried to get up to the peak gardens and just to top of the peak . Unfortunately (although as we expected because of the fog) once we got up to the top it was so foggy that you couldn’t see the person 15 feet in front of you –let alone anything else. On a clear day it probably is really cool. Then we walked back through the peak gardens, but they weren’t impressive –but I think that is because my idea of a garden is to have tons of flowers, I think in china it means just vegetation. And to me we had been seeing vegetation all day so this just had a few more flowers. Anyways we walked down and got a little lost going the other way down the governors walk, but finally made it down the steep mountain. It was very scary because it was foggy and taxis and cars were often zipping around the mountain. Then we got ice cream at Hogan daz which was expensive but delicious. By now it was dark so we tried walking to see the lighted city. We saw it and it was nice but we couldn’t take pics. Then we went on the tram back down the mountain –the mountain is so steep your ears pop several times. We got to see some of the light show of the skyscrapers of HKI. This was very cool. They have this from 8-8:20ish each day or something like that.

Then we walked around the city at night and it was very beautiful, but this time my camera had lost all battery power, so I didn’t take many pictures, but it was dark so they wouldn’t have come out well. OH it was so fun, we accidently caught a Chinese couple making out in like a place pulled off to the side of the street. I was very happy because I don’t see as many asians making out as there should be in a city of this beauty. We were exhausted as we got on the subway, luckily it was less crowded =)

I saw more dogs and cats on Victoria Peak than I have the whole time I have been here. We decided it was because this is the wealthiest part of HK. We chatted with other tourists and it was very nice –the tourist places have a lot more friendly smiley people. Back near HKBU, people usually don’t smile when I smile at them. It makes me sad. Anywho the places to live at Victoria Peak are like 900 million HK dollars –at least someone told me that (maybe I have my facts wrong, but I kinda doubt it). Gas here is about 8 american dollars per gallon, so if you have a car it is very expensive. I have also found that other than taxis, people drive Mercedes and BMWs and nice Hondas. I have not seen a beater car yet.

I didn’t run this morning because I decided to give my legs a break. We are going to leave in an hour to go to Lantau Island where the Big Buddha is. I hear it is very nice here, but again a lot of walking –I have no idea how many miles I walked yesterday (and up mountain too!). If it seems like the weather isn’t going to be nice, we will probably just go to Mong Kok or the other shopping areas around here. Sorry this was so long! Have a good day/night!

pictures of my soccer shoes!

Hong Kong Day 5

My legs ache!! I just finished playing 3 hrs of soccer. My shins are killing me. It is so hard to play on cement, it is just like really fast indoor. I think the ball is slightly weighted. I was worried about if they were going to play because it rained pretty hard all day. There was evening a red thunderstorm warning which means elementary schools let out early. It wasn’t raining at 7 when I left to go to the park, but it definitely was puddley. I was 5 mins early and all of them were there waiting for me. Right when I got there, Kinnex took me to get shoes to play. They are very strange, they are very small and cheap ~only 10 HK dollars, which is a little over 1 american dollar. They are so cheap, my soccer friends replace them after 5 games or so. So I got those at a mall even closer to festival wok, I think the prices are a lot cheaper there… anyways then we played. It was a lot of fun even though it rained 70% of the time, and thundered and lighteninged (I don’t think that is a word). At one point it totally downpoured. And yet they still played. I asked them if they were worried about the lightening. They said no because there are such tall buildings with lightening rods and that people who get struck by lightening have done something so bad that they deserve it… or something I couldn’t totally get it. The guys do speak good English. Early in the first game, I showed the other team that I had skill when I stole the ball and beat 2 defenders and scored. The guys I play with are very skilled, but a little lazy so it is fun. They are definitely better than most Americans –except maybe club and college kids, and even then if they really put themselves to the test, it may be a good battle. Anywho, it was a lot of fun. They are all very polite for the most part especially to me. Hehe they do like to say shit a lot. Its funny. Justin said that they curse in Cantonese too. I tried to get them to teach me a swear word in Cantonese, but they were pretty reluctant. Finally they told me one, not that I pronounce it correctly, but it was funny for me. Anyways it was really fun, but tiring. I gave them my email and phone number and Kinnex gave me his email and msn name, so hopefully I will be able to know when they play, though it seems like everyday. They also invited me and my roommate to hang out with them and go to the beach and such. That sounds like fun and I am very proud to have some local buddies =)

Work on the other hand was not good. It is frustrating because we don’t really know what we are doing and it is hard to get the professor to help us. we can definitely tell that there is some language and cultural barriers. But I am a pretty optimistic because research is hard and frustrating. And it was only the first day. Monday will be better.

The others are back from the bars. I much prefer to play soccer than go bar hopping =) so this has been good. Tomorrow we are supposedly going to Victoria peak. I dunno when, since it is almost 1am and no one is back from the bars. It doesn’t really matter to me because I plan on waking in the morning to either do some running or lifting, if my legs allow me that is. I think I will go to bed soon or at least relax and read in bed. Im out.

hi i am trying to see if this will post

Hong Kong Day 4: First Day of Work

today was my first day of work. while the other groups worked 40mins, 2 hours, and 7 respectively. Chelsea and i worked a solid 8. i am still not exactly sure what I am doing and we spent some of our time today going to the library and brushing up on some linear algebra and differential equations since our project involves these subjects and numerical analysis (which chelsea and i havent learned yet, but i guess we will!)

for math/enginerds/comp sci/general nerds only: if you are none of these please ignore following paragraph: here is the project description from Colorado School of Mines:

"There are two important issues to be considered in developing a numerical method for solving differential equations: efficiency and accuracy. The efficiency of a numerical method depends upon many factors. The spectral analysis of differentiation matrices plays a key role in the analysis of numerical methods. For the numerical solution of elliptic partial differential equations, a straightforward application of the spectral analysis is in the convergence analysis of iterative algorithms. Optimal acceleration parameters in classical iterative algorithms, such as SOR, ADI and Chebyshev algorithms, can be obtained only when extremal eigenvalues or good estimates of these are available.
The aim of this project is to study the spectral analysis of differentiation matrices arising from the discretization of high-order methods, such as finite element methods and spline collocation methods with high-order approximations, and to develop a fast algorithm for solving the Helmholtz equation with applications in electromagnetics. The students participating in this project will focus on the analysis of the differential eigenvalue problems with various high-order finite element approximations. This will involve the numerical approximation of second order two-point boundary value problems. A closed form of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors is expected and the eigenvector matrix obtained should be related to discrete Fourier transforms."

ok i dont really understand what 85% of that means. Today we read some papers talking about numerical techniques to solve Poisson equations (I dont know EXACTLY what i am talking about here -so math profs, dad, any other smart person bear -or is it bare- with me) we touched on Tensor product methods and used fourier analysis to solve Dirichlet-Dirichlet, Neumann-Neumann, and Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions in the Poisson equations....well i am getting confused. but anyways we worked hard.

OK you non-nerds can come back and read: after work instead of going to Mong Kok to go shopping I decided i needed to run since i missed the past two days. so i said no and I got to talk to Benjamin a bit so that was nice. Then I went running and ran around looking for a safe track to run on -since it was night -althought I think it is very safe to run on the streets. they are very populated and well-lit. but i went to tunnel park because the small track was lit and there were lots of joggers and tai chi people and a security guide in the middle. as i was running i saw that there were people shooting on the soccer court near the track. it took me three laps to get the nerve to go up and ask them if i could join. and even before that i saw a pakistani (spelling?) man sitting in the stands drinking some water and smoking. i asked him if they were going to play and he said yes and that they had just finished and would start a new game soon. he asked me where i was and if i played soccer. he played keeper and was very fun to watch in the goal because he wore loose capri length jeans and had a huge black beard. he was very nice and we both walked over to the people shooting and i said hello. they passed me the ball and i shot and even though i didnt score, they all went AHHHHH when I kicked it and were impressed with the power i had in my shot. after about 20 mins of shooting and meeting people, we got a 6v6 game with keepers going. it was very fun. we played for 30-40 mins. then some of the guys left to play basketball. then Kenis (the one who talked to me a lot while we were shooting) bought me a water (THANK GOODNESS because man i was soo thirsty and a sobbing wet mop of sweat) and I met and taked with him, Justin, Jason, Tony, and Tat (who said his name was sean because he has no English name). Most people in HK have 2 names, 1 in chinese and 1 in english. they told me their chinese names and laughed sooo hard at how i said them. i told them how i thought i had been tought to say "my name is" and they laughed the hardest about that and kept making me repeat it. --i wonder what it sounded like i was saying... anyways they asked me about the united states and such. they were about my age and were waiting to find out their test results to see if they would be excepted into a university. it is very competitive here to get into college. they told me it is common to see people commit suicide by jumping out the window of their tall buildings. i will have to watch my head as i walk. anyways we talked for about 45 mins and they said i was very good at soccer and that i had good leg and arm muscles hehe. they invited me to play with them tomorrow night at 7:15. so i am excited about that. Kenis offered to lend me one of his extra cell fones for when i am here so he can call me and tell me when they are playing. i dont know if i will take him up on his offer, but i think tomorrow i will bring paper and pencil to get some internet contact info from him and to him (from me). anways this was very awesome and i need to stop so i can play spades with mange.
see ya!

Here are some of the tons of ladies hanging around the city

Boat Races

Hong Kong Day 3: The Dragon Boat Festival

Today was fun day. I didn’t feel good last night so I took some meds that helped me sleep so I only woke up once –im getting better at this sleeping thing. I woke up at 7:15 and got all set to run, but it was pouring so instead I ate a kudos bar and took a shower. Today we went to the annual Dragon Boat Festival. From Wikipedia “It is held in memory of the Chinese poet Qu Yuan. He commited suicide by drowning himself in a river because he was disgusted by the corruption in the Chu government. The local people, knowing him to be a good man, decided to throw food into the river to feed the fishes to prevent them from eating Qu's body. They also sat on dragon boats, and tried to scare the fishes away by the thundering sound of drums aboard the boat and the fierce looking dragon-head in the front of the boat.” I was very thankful that Nick had asked around and gotten directions to do this. This festival happens in Stanley on Hong Kong Island –about as far from us as possible. Stanley is on the Southeast side of Hong Kong Island. Unfortunately our group lost a person. Mike –the biggest guy in our group (go figure!). we arent exactly sure when we lost him –don’t worry since coming back 8 hrs later we found him here at the hotel. But I think we lost him before we went on the subway and once we got off the green subway and got on the red subway which takes us under the water to HKI (Hong Kong Island). By then there was no way we would find him. I wonder what he ended up doing?

Anywho we went to Central HKI and from there got on a bus (bus 6) we should have gone on bus 6 express because it goes through a tunnel and is quicker to get to Stanley. But going on bus 6 was very scenic. Once we got there it was sooo crowded!! I heard from someone in our group that they expect 25,000 extra people to stop by this town. It was nice to see people who spoke english –we heard lots of british accents. We watched some of the races and I saw some chinese cheerleaders who cheered for the team Herbalsol. They were also handing out free samples of a healthy mix of tea and juice. I tried some (maybe this was a bad idea but it seemed like it was ok because it was a brand name) it definitely tasted healthy and wasn’t the best thing. We left the water and went to a restaurant where we got pizza –it was very good actually. Then we walked around and shopped at a market which had pretty good prices. I need to get over my dislike of bartering, because I can get some really good prices for things here.

Then we left Stanley and went back to Central HKI. There we wondered around and looked at the pretty architecture around the city. We were confused by the number of women who were camped out on the streets of the city. They werent homeless because they had bags from DKNY and other stores and some were looking bored while others were just chatting and playing cards. It was very weird. I will post a picture of it. Then we went back to HKBU.

Then the most amazing thing happened!!! On my walk with Chelsea and John back to the NTT House (the hotel I am staying at) I heard my name being shouted. There across the street was MAGGIE MCCORMICK!! For those of you who don’t know she goes to Taylor and is friends with me (but better friends with Benjamin and Mange –or so they would like to think so). She has been studying abroad here and leaves tomorrow, but actually is living in a dorm a few buildings away. Amazing huh? I sure thought so. It definitely was better than any boat race to see a friendly face. =) thanks maggie. It was amazing that we just happened to be passing each other on separte sides of the street –and that she saw and recognized me! I am so glad we stopped at the grocery store. =D

anywho im chilling here. Tomorrow the party is over. I have to work at 9 which means I need to leave the hotel by 8:20. Maggie says there is a quicker way for us to get to where we work and that she will email me directions soon. =) anywho im getting sick of this rambling and this is getting to long. Later dudes!
